Bus in smash 'after cabbie attacks driver'

POLICE detained a cabbie for an alleged road rage attack on a bus driver that resulted in a three-vehicle collision yesterday morning.

Bus driver Huang Wei suffered injuries to his head and scratches to his hands, Pudong police said.

The smash in the Pudong New Area about 7:30am caused damage estimated at 9,000 yuan (US$1,407).

Police said the taxi driver, surnamed Gu, leapt on to the No. 778 bus and started beating the driver. The dispute was said to be about one vehicle cutting up the other.

According to the Pudong Jingao bus company, the No. 778 bus was stationary in traffic on Jinqiao Road when someone knocked violently at the door.

When the driver Huang opened the door to see what the commotion was about, Gu rushed in and seized his neck, the bus company said.

As the pair grappled, the packed bus moved forward and rammed a taxi which in turn hit a van.

Police said Huang tried to pull the hand brake, but was stopped by his attacker. Huang was also struck on the head by a mop.

An official surnamed Zhang from the bus company said several passengers intervened to stop the fight.

Gu was identified as a driver from Shenhua, a member of the Shanghai Blue Union Taxi Co.

It was not available for comment.
