Buses in high-speed collision
TWO buses collided at high speed in the city's Xuhui District late on Saturday night, with one careering into shops and the other on to the sidewalk.
One driver and several passengers were injured in the accident. All were in stable condition yesterday.
A factor in the accident was that both buses were traveling fast, said police, whose investigation was still ongoing yesterday.
Compensation negotiations organized by the bus company are under way, the Xinmin Evening News reported.
The accident happened about 11pm at the intersection of Damuqiao Road and Xietu Road. A No. 733 bus, traveling from west to east on Xietu Road, and a No. 45 bus, going from south to north on Damuqiao Road, collided while crossing the intersection.
Early investigations suggest both were traveling at high speed and the drivers lost control, said officers. The wet road surface may also be a factor.
"There was a sudden bang and then the bus shook on impact," said a passenger surnamed Hu on the No. 45 bus. "There were four passengers and we were all thrown around. It was really painful."
The No. 733 bus crashed into a real estate premises and a tea store while the No. 45 bus ended up on the sidewalk.
The front of the No. 733 bus was seriously damaged with the windshield smashed. A wall of the tea store was demolished.
The driver on the No. 733 suffered a fractured foot, while a female passenger on the same service broke her tailbone.
