Buzek seeks to 'engage China'

EUROPEAN Parliament President Jerzy Buzek opened the European Parliament Friendship Days yesterday morning in the EU-Belgium Pavilion.

Shanghai is the third stop in his five-day visit to China after Beijing and Nanjing.

"We want to engage China," Buzek said. "We need China as a strong partner. We must face the challenges of climate change, energy and financial crisis together."

Buzek is aware of the important role China plays in the world economy.

"We very much appreciate China's steady commitment to macroeconomic stability and its recent development," he said. "We need to finish constructing a solid bridge between China and Europe, and build this bridge from both sides. There is one essential element to finish this bridge: respect for rule of law, civil rights and minorities."

In Beijing, Buzek's discussions with Chinese leaders included meetings with Premier Wen Jiabao. In Nanjing, he delivered a speech at Nanjing University on the China-EU strategic partnership.
