Cabbie catches 'ride and run' passenger

A patient believed to have cheated many cabbies by fleeing without paying taxi fares was finally caught and fined by police yesterday as he ran into one of his former victims.
Dazhong Company taxi driver, Li Guojun, reported the matter to Putuo District police after he caught the "ride and run'' passenger with the help of pharmacy staff.
The man, who was sick and needed to go to Putuo District Central Hospital regularly to get injections, is believed to have succeeded in cheating many cabbies by getting them to take him to hospital and running off without paying fares.
But none of the other cabbies filed complaints with police because they didn't want to waste time during work hours.
However, Li Guojun could prove to police the passenger had at least twice dodged taxi fares while riding in his car.
Li picked up the passenger at the crossing of Haining Road and Xizang Road N about 10:30am yesterday.
The passenger asked for a ride to Wuxi, in Jiangsu Province. He first volunteered to pay 800 yuan, about double the actual cost of the trip, and then increased the offer to 1,500 yuan.
But he asked the driver to first drop him off at Putuo hospital and wait for him to pick up medication.
"At this point, it occurred to me that the same thing happened about six months ago,'' Li said. A passenger had used the same ruse and Li waited for 50 minutes outside the hospital but never saw him again.
Li looked in the rear-view mirror and recognized the passenger as the one who had cheated him all that time ago.
This time, the passenger jumped out of the taxi when it was slowing down and disappeared after running into a pharmacy next door to the hospital.
The cabbie chased him and a clerk led the driver through a back door to the hospital where they found the passenger getting an injection in the emergency department.
The pharmacy clerks told police the man had cheated many cabbies before.
Police ordered the passenger to pay 200 yuan to the Dazhong cabbie in punishment.
