Cabbie returns lost gold worth 1m yuan

A TAXI driver will get a 200 yuan (US$32.39) reward from his company for recovering a bag of gold bullion worth more than a million yuan that a passenger left in his cab.

"I'm not greedy and just wanted to do something good," said cabby Ni Longchun, who works for Shanghai Dazhong Taxi Co and has been driving a cab for nearly 10 years. He didn't get a reward from the bullion owner.

As Ni picked up a passenger on March 5 in downtown Huangpu District, he saw a black bag lying beneath the back seats.

"Don't move," Ni said he warned the passenger who was looking inside the bag and appeared ready to take the bag.

While the passenger claimed it was his, Ni said he would turn him in to police.

The bag with the six gold bars had been left by Ma Yonggen. When Ma realized he had misplaced the bag, he called police and the taxi company.

"When I was looking up the police, I also received the call from my company about the lost bag," said the cabbie. The passenger he had onboard got out and he drove back to meet Ma to return the bullion.

"I sweated in a hurry to send the bag back," said Ni.

"I have never seen so many bullion bars," he said.
