Cabbie sentenced 3 years for injuring drunken man

A cabbie was sentenced to three years in jail for injuring a drunken man who he had refused to give a ride, Yangpu District People's Court said Monday.

The cabbie, surnamed Wu, refused the passenger because he feared the "drunken man" would cause trouble, the court said.

The victim, surnamed Song, knocked on the window of Wu’s cab on Fushun Road after having dinner with his friends on January 12. However, Wu refused to give him a ride, saying he was off duty, when he realized Song had been drinking.

Song was irritated the refusal and grabbed the cab’s door handle. Wu started driving away, causing song to fall to the ground, the court said. Song didn’t let go of the door handle and was dragged about 100 meters.

After Wu left the scene, Song was sent to the hospital and diagnosed with a brain injury.

Police identified Wu with the help of surveillance videos and took him in for questing. Wu confessed and later offered to pay Song more than 260,000 yuan (US$42,380) in compensation, the court said.

The court gave Wu a lighter sentence because the two sides came to an understanding.
