Call to raise awareness on pulmonary hypertension

ABOUT 90 percent of patients with pulmonary hypertension, a rare but serious type of high blood pressure, suffered misdiagnosis, local medical experts said today, the World Pulmonary Hypertension Day, an annual global event to raise public awareness of the disease.

PH is a chronic and life-threatening disease that can affect the lungs and heart. It is difficult to diagnosis the disease in ordinary medical tests as most symptoms of PH are similar with other lung and heart disease. If not receiving proper diagnosis and treatment, patients can die within two to three years, experts said.

The average age of diagnosed patient is 36 years old and there are more female patients than male. About 75 percent of patients are between 20 and 40 years and about 15 percent are below 20 years old.
