Campus security boosted with student volunteers

A TEAM of volunteer students was set up in Shanghai yesterday to promote security at local universities.

A total of 9,425 students from 61 local universities have registered in the team, authorities announced at the Tongji University establishment ceremony.

The team was set up as the country is inviting the public to help ensure security for the whole of society.

“We will provide training for them to promote their awareness and skills to protect their own physical and property security, as well as the campus safety,” said Zhang Xu, director of the school logistics and security department of the Shanghai Education Commission.

“They are also expected to help their schoolmates improve their awareness and skills via creative activities. And also, they can help us to find out potential safety hazards on campus.”

Zhang said authorities will provide funds and opportunities to observe or experience real security jobs, such as assistants to traffic police and firefighters.

Liu Yilei, an official with Shanghai Public Security Bureau, said local universities had low crime rates but telecom and online fraud had become frequent, with victims including both students and teachers.

“Young people are new to the Internet and therefore they are also easier to become victims,” he said.

Liu also said they will also ask the volunteers to survey their schoolmates about what will further improve campus security.

According to statistics released by the school logistics and security department of the Shanghai Education Commission, theft and fraud are the top two crimes in universities.

“The ratio between theft and fraud used to be 7:3 previously, but as telecom and online fraud has been increasing in recent years, the ratio became 4:6 this year,” said Ouyang Shiquan, vice director of the department.

The public security bureau and the city’s education commission also authorized the Shanghai Farce Troupe to produce a series of comedies based on real crimes to warn students.

These include telecom and online fraud, as well as sexual harassment.

The comedies were performed after the volunteer team establishment ceremony and will be staged in other universities.
