Car hits Canadian diver crossing street
CANADIAN diver Kevin Geyson, a participant in the world aquatics championships in Shanghai, is recovering after being hit by a car over the weekend while crossing the street outside of the sports venue.
Geyson, 27, suffered injuries to his left leg and one of his lungs, doctors at Huashan Hospital told Shanghai Daily yesterday. Doctors will decide today when he can be released from the hospital, but there's no need for surgery, according to the hospital.
Geyson, with his partner Eric Sehn, finished eighth in the men's 10-meter synchronized diving event at the FINA World Championships on July 17.
The accident happened on Saturday when Geyson was crossing the street outside the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center where the championships are being held, according to the Canadian CBC Sports.
Geyson, who was unconscious for a few hours, regained consciousness in the hospital, where he is being treated for a severe gash on his leg, and a lung concussion, according to the report.
Geyson has spoken with his parents, and his mother is planning to fly over from Canada, said Mitch Geller, chief technical officer of Diving Canada.
The diver was riding on a bus when he asked the driver to let him off, the TV network reported. He was then hit while trying to cross the street.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
"He is awake, he is alert and doesn't have any big injuries," Samuel Larochella, a spokesperson for Diving Canada, told the network. Larochella also described the accident as a frightening one.
"The local doctors and the Canadian doctors were there when he got to the hospital," said Larochella,
"There will be someone from the Canadian team with him all of that time (until he is released)."
