Car slams into H&M, after hitting pedestrian

A speeding sedan ran onto the sidewalk and smashed the shop window of an H&M outlet on downtown Huaihai Road M. last night, severely injuring a pedestrian.

Police said the crash happened about 10:20pm near the intersection of Huaihai and Si'nan roads. They detained the driver and tests showed he was not driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The pedestrian was badly hurt but his condition has stabilized.

Witnesses said the black Mercedes-Benz sedan with a Shanghai license plate was at high speed and lost control when it tried to avoid a taxi that was making a left turn. The sedan climbed onto the sidewalk, knocking down the pedestrian and smashing the clothing shop window, the witnesses added.

Rescuers pulled the victim from under the car and rushed him to a nearby hospital.

The driver, a young man, told police that he didn't have a drivers license with him.
