Cell phone addiction dangerous on Metro platforms, officials warn
A woman who fell onto the subway tracks while looking at her mobile phone provided a good opportunity for Shanghai Metro authorities to remind passengers to pay attention on subway platforms, Xinmin.cn reported today.
Surveillance video released by Metro officials showed the woman walking around on the platform while waiting for the subway train. Then, she took her mobile phone out of her pocket and kept looking down at it while continuing to walk.
She walked right to the edge of the platform and fell onto the tracks.
The woman in her 50s wasn’t seriously hurt — no train was approaching when the incident happened on February 21 at the Hongqiao Road Station of Line 3.
It wasn’t the first time something like that had happened, officials said.
In August, a girl got her foot stuck in the platform gap as she was entering a Line 8 train with her eyes glued to her phone.
Firefighters had to use a jack to extract her foot, the report said.
