Change of life style reduces chronic disease risk

CHRONIC disease is the death cause for 91 percent of local residents last year, officials from Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention today told a health lecture on chronic disease control.

Experts said genetics, environment, behavior and health service are the four key sectors for people’s health, while behavior is the most important one.

The risky factors for local residents include smoking, excessive drinking, insufficient vegetable, fruit and dairy products, excessive intake of red meat, salt and fat, a lack of physical exercises and the prevalence of overweight and obesity.

“A proper control of these risky factors can greatly reduce the death rate of chronic diseases like cardio-cerebral vascular diseases, tumor, diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the four commonest chronic diseases,” said Dr Wu Fan, director of Shanghai CDC. “If changing life style, the mortality rate can drop by 30 percent.”
