Charges Warning
A local consumers' watchdog yesterday warned diners about hidden charges at city restaurants as the Spring Festival approaches. Consumers have complained that some eateries are charging extra "seat fees."
In one instance, at the Shuyou Seafood Restaurant Jing'an District branch, guests must pay 2 yuan (30 US cents) for a seat in the lobby and 3 yuan in a VIP room. People also pay "room fee" of 50 yuan or 80 yuan if booking "luxurious VIP rooms."
The Shanghai Commission of Consumers' Rights and Interests Protection said this is illegal, and consumers can suspend payment.
Shuyou said few guests have complained.
