Charity restores sight of injured worker
A 35-year-old man from Yunnan Province will receive free surgery on Saturday to regain the sight of his left eye injured in a work accident – thanks to charity from
True Love Under the Blue Sky.
The patient surnamed Nima, who is of Lisu ethnic origin, arrived at Shanghai No. 10 People's Hospital over the weekend for checks and therapy before surgery. Doctors will remove stones from his eye, transplant a new lens and repair his injured retina.
"It's a very complicated and high-end optical surgery, which can't be done in Yunnan Province," said Xu Ying, a hospital official. "We have two expert teams to take charge of different parts of the surgery on Saturday, when the whole procedure will be broadcast on TV."
Nima is the only breadwinner in his family from a poor village in Deqing, Yunnan. His eye was injured by flying rocks after an explosion at his construction site.
In addition to Nima, one Expo site worker with an eye disease, two family members of Expo workers and some 10 local elderly people with cataracts will receive free optical operations on Thursday, "as we decided to give more people brightness through this charity move," Xu said.
