Chase ends with jump

A man running from police jumped off an elevated road, seriously injuring himself yesterday morning in Jing'an District.

He also injured a police officer's arm with a brick, police said. The officer was in stable condition while the man, suffering multiple bone fractures, received treatment at Huadong Hospital, police said.

"We still do not know why he would jump off suddenly," said a police spokesman.

Traffic police partially blocked traffic on Yan'an Elevated Road for about half an hour during the morning rush.

The man, surnamed Zhang, from northeastern China's Heilongjiang Province, was spotted stealing a bike in front of a gate of Jing'an Park at 7:43am.

After the police arrived, Zhang picked up bricks and threw them at officers.

Running to Yan'an Elevated Road from a ramp nearby, the suspect stood still about 10 meters above the ground road.

"He did not say a single word and refused to leave," said an officer, surnamed Guo.

Around 8:30am, the man jumped off, police said.
