Chemical gas cloud leaks over Baoshan
RESIDENTS in north Shanghai's Baoshan District complained of a pungent white gas after a chemical leak yesterday from a nearby company which environmental officials said was silicon tetrachloride.
The gas was not dispersed until 4pm yesterday when checks by Baoshan Environmental Protection Bureau indicated the local air quality returned to normal, bureau officials told Xinmin.cn today.
Officials said the silicon tetrachloride leaked from broken pipes in Shanghai Xiangjun Fiber Electric Material Co Ltd and formed the gas when exposed to rain.
Penalties have yet to be decided, officials said.
