Chicken feet product sold at Wal-Mart outlet found to contain excessive preservative

A spicy chicken feet product sold at a local Wal-Mart outlet was found to contain excessive preservative, the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration said, adding that it could damage a person’s kidney and liver.

In a report, the FDA said the chicken feet, produced by Shanghai Laoniu Food Co Ltd and sold at a Wal-Mart outlet on Yi’erbajinian Road in Baoshan District, contained excessive sorbic acid — 1.67 times more than acceptable standard.

The natural organic compound is commonly used as a food preservative, but a long-term, excessive intake can harm kidney, liver and even bones.

The FDA also found excessive pesticide in a vegetable product sold by Shanghai Carhua Food Ltd, which had Chlorpyrifos that was 2.4 more times than the standard permits.

Staphylococcus aureus, a bacterium that causes food poisoning, was detected in a salty chicken product sold by Zhanpeng Precooked Food Store in Baoshan, as well as in a beef product sold by Yingbo Food Co Ltd in Zhabei.
