China Pavilion open until 8pm
THE China Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo site has extended its opening hours to 8pm from 5pm after nearly 50,000 people, the pavilion's maximum capacity, visited each day at the weekend.
The attendance on Saturday and yesterday set a new record since the pavilion reopened on December 1 after the World Expo 2010.
Tickets to enter the pavilion, which opens at 9am, will be on sale from 8am to 1pm and priced at 20 yuan (US$3).
There was such a rush for tickets yesterday that officials put up a notice on the Expo website in the morning telling people intending to visit to choose another day.
The message was also broadcast to people queuing at the ticket stalls.
By noon yesterday, visitors were having to line up for two hours to buy a ticket and wait another four hours before they could enter the pavilion.
Officials expect huge crowds until the end of the holiday.
Visitors, especially Shanghai residents, should avoid visiting until Wednesday, said Qian Zhiguang, director of the China Pavilion Department of the Expo Bureau.
There will be plenty of opportunities after the holiday as the pavilion is remaining open until the end of May.
The Yaohua Road station on Metro Lines 7 and 8 near the pavilion was also busy with more than 100,000 passengers every day during the holiday period.
Metro staff and police were on hand to keep the crowds moving.
