China鈥檚 rehabilitation professionals in great shortage

There are 20 rehabilitation professionals among every 10,000 people in developed countries, however there are only 0.4 such professionals in China, which is in a huge demand, local medical experts told the Shanghai Young Rehabilitation Therapist Skill Contest at Shanghai Sunshine Rehabilitation Center.
With the rising of the elderly and people’s request for rehabilitation service, more general hospitals are turning to rehabilitation facilities, offering therapy for people after surgery and care and training for the elderly.
With some 50 million disabled people and 70 million seniors, China has only some 20,000 medical staff working in rehabilitation area. China now only has 5,600 professional rehabilitation therapists, while it needs at least 350,000.
“The key is to speed up cultivation of young rehabilitation professionals as soon as possible,” Dr Yu Zhuowei, director of Shanghai Medical Rehabilitation Association. “Shanghai’s medical schools have started to recruit more students on this major in order to meet the huge demand.”
