Chinese green card holders in Shanghai apply for new ID cards

ABOUT 10 expats living in Pudong who hold the Chinese green card have applied for the new ID cards for permanent foreign residents since June 1, police said on Tuesday.
There are over 800 Chinese green card holders in Pudong, accounting for one-third of all in Shanghai.
The new cards with embedded chips, which are similar to Chinese citizens’ identity cards, will gradually enable access to finance, education, hospital, transport, telecommunications, tax, social insurance, property registration and legal services in China with no other personal documents required, according to the Ministry of Public Security.
David Marshall Morse, a US engineer who has lived in Shanghai for seven and a half years and got his Chinese green card in December last year, came to apply for the new ID card at the Zhangjiang exit-entry administration office on Tuesday morning.
“The new smart card will have more capability because it’s going to be machine-readable, as I understand,” he said.
Applicants whose green card is still valid need only to bring their current ID card and fill out a form at the exit-entry offices with no other documents required.
The new card will be issued to them within 20 days since the date of application, police said.
Applicants who apply after December 31 this year will be able to apply only within one month till the expiry date of the old card, but future new applicants of the Chinese green card will get the new ID card once their application is accepted.
Shanghai applicants can call 2895-1900 if they have any problems regarding the process.
