Cigar-smuggling group busted
EIGHTEEN people, who allegedly smuggled cigars from abroad and sold them online have been caught and over 30,000 cigars seized from them in six provinces, Yangpu District police said yesterday.
The value of the cigars was estimated to be 32 million yuan (US$5.21 million).
In February, the Yangpu tobacco monopoly authority reported to police that two online stores were selling cigars and that the sales topped 600,000 yuan within a week. The cigars were found to be smuggled ones.
Police traced the owner of the online stores, a person surnamed Wei, to a residential complex in the Pudong New Area on March 13.
Over 600 cigars and 70 cartons of cigarettes were seized from his house.
Wei said he bought the cigars for wholesale price from two brothers surnamed Tong. The brothers bought the cigars from Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and sold them to 20 online vendors.
