City acts tougher on fire accidents

FOUR workers and construction contractors responsible for a fire accident have been detained, the Shanghai Fire Control Bureau said today.

On Tuesday, a fire occurred in an abandoned warehouse in a fruit wholesale market in Jiading District. Two men, Meng Chuan and Xie Fuming, who were tearing down the warehouse, were held responsible for the accident and given a 10-day detention.

Also this week, an unlicensed welder, surnamed Li, was found working at a construction site in Chongming County during a safety inspection. He was detained for three days. His boss, surnamed Duan, was detained for 10 days for hiring unlicensed welders.

Shanghai carried out a citywide inspection to root out fire risks and other safety problems in the wake of the November 15 deadly fire that engulfed a residential high-rise in downtown Jiang'an District and claimed 58 lives. Inspectors targeted construction sites, shopping centers, high-rises and other dense-populated areas.
