City aims to recruits 1m Expo volunteers

SHANGHAI hopes to recruit one million volunteers to maintain order and work safety during the 2010 World Expo, officials said yesterday.

The volunteers, including Shanghai natives and expatriates who have been living in the city for at least one year, will be responsible for street and community security patrols, food and drug safety checks and emergency coordination.

"Local residents aged from 18 to 65, healthy and willing to devote themselves into voluntary work may send their application letters at on-site recruitment stands or via the Internet to join the group," said Le Weizhong, the volunteer group leader.

All volunteers will begin work at the start of next year after thorough training. Shanghai Ping'an Volunteer Group has already recruited more than 800,000 local residents since October.

"Our volunteers are coming from all walks of life," said Le. "We're expecting a total number of one million volunteers, which will make the group the largest in the state's history."

Each volunteer will be covered by medical and accident insurance.
