City authority hands out first ticket of fine for breaking 'no firecrackers on days of heavy pollution' rule
A MAN who set off firecrackers this morning to celebrate the opening of his store in Jinshan District was fined 100 yuan (US$15.38) by local police.
Setting off firecrackers on days of ‘heavy air pollution’ is banned according to the city's new fireworks regulation, which was introduced in bid to curb pollution. It was effective on New Year’s Day.
Policemen of the Shanyang Police Station of Jinshan Public Security Bureau saw remains of firecrackers outside the store during a patrol around 10:20am, and questioned the man.
It was the first case in which people were fined for lighting firecrackers on heavily polluted day in the city, police said.
The air quality index was 223 at 10am, according to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.
