City beefs up security for Expo

EVERY car will undergo security checks when parking in underground lots as Shanghai beefs up security measures for the World Expo from May through October.

The measure is part of the draft security plan published by Shanghai World Expo Security Work Headquarters for public comments, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.

The plan calls for better security screening in underground spaces of equipment, personnel and measures.

There are 28,000 underground complexes covering 40 million square meters in Shanghai, according to the latest figures.

Meanwhile, from next Monday, security checks will be routinely applied on buses, Metro, ferries and airports, according to the headquarters.

Tighter security checks will also be made on express delivery parcels.
