City blazes claim the lives of two
FIRES at a warehouse and two apartments in the city claimed two lives yesterday.
A warehouse worker was killed when a blaze broke out at a logistics company warehouse at midday in Putuo District yesterday and a 95-year-old man died of smoke inhalation in a fire at his home at midnight on Tuesday.
The victim in the warehouse blaze was a 33-year-old man surnamed Chen, Putuo District police said.
"Around 11:30am I saw heavy smoke billowing out of the building covering several floors," a convenience shop attendant surnamed Lan told Shanghai Daily. The warehouse, the Xinbao Logistics Storehouse, was owned by forwarding companies.
Witnesses said there was an acrid smell like burnt plastic. The building was packed with thermal insulation materials and plastics. It took firefighters and seven fire engines about 40 minutes to put out the blaze.
Most of the equipment in the warehouse appeared to have been destroyed and part of the roof was damaged.
Putuo District police said the cause of the blaze was still under investigation.
About 11pm on Tuesday, an elderly man surnamed Lu was killed in a blaze at his second-floor apartment in Sidong New Estate in Wusong area. Firefighters were called by neighbors who heard a series of explosions. The victim was found dead on his bed.
Lu, who lived alone, had a broken leg and could not move easily, neighbors said.
At 11:40am yesterday in Zhabei District, a six-floor apartment on Baotong Road caught fire when a man aged over 70 was cooking in the kitchen. Oil caught fire after he had stepped out of the kitchen and the flames spread. The man was saved after he ran to his balcony and shouted for help.
