City endures its hottest spell since 1947
Shanghai has sweltered through 10 continuous days of 35 degrees Celsius or above — the first time since mid-August 1947.
There have been 22 hot days and 13 consecutive hot days over 35 so far this summer.
Saturday was the coolest day since August 9, at 34.5. But a yellow alert, the third highest in a four-tier heat system, was issued by the local meteorological bureau at noon yesterday.
The maximum temperature was 35 degrees Celsius recorded at the benchmark Xujiahui meteorological center in downtown Xuhui District.
The mercury is expected to reach 36 today and tomorrow. But it is set to fall to between 34 and 33 for the rest of the week, due to the influence of Typhoon Bavi, the first super typhoon this year
Although the typhoon will not hit Shanghai directly, it is expected to bring thunderstorms this week. The maximum wind force in coastal areas of the city will reach 75 to 88 kilometers per hour today.
Bavi, the eighth typhoon this year, formed near Taiwan at 8am on Saturday.
There have been six typhoons this month, more than the August average of 5.7.
