City offices will go dark tonight for 'Earth Hour'
LANDSCAPE lighting around the city's People's Square and lights in government office buildings will be switched off for an hour this evening as the city government yesterday announced participation in the worldwide Earth Hour campaign.
The Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall and the fountain in People's Square will join other areas and buildings in darkness from 8:30pm to 9:30pm to help raise environmental awareness.
Other buildings and tourism sites, and also residents, are encouraged to participate.
Shanghai also plans to promote a campaign to ask office buildings to switch off their indoor lights for an hour every day at noon. The Metro Tower in Xujiahui is the first office building to join in.
A company in the building said it saved over 4,000 kilowatt hours of electricity during a trial of the lights-out policy.
