City pingtan troupe adopts crowd-funding for new work 'Lin Huiyin'

SHANGHAI Pingtan Troupe is now working on a new piece of work "Lin Huiyin," and it would be the first time for the troupe to apply a business mode of crowd-funding for production and marketing, officials said today.

Script for the original piece has been conceived for 3 years. Based on the legendary life and emotions of Lin Huiyin, an author and the first female architect in modern China. She and her husband Liang Sicheng, who is referred to as the “Father of Modern Chinese Architecture,” spent their careers restoring ancient buildings. The play will be about the versatile woman's love, patriotism and devotion.

Pingtan, a traditional storytelling and singing art form in Suzhou dialect dates back about 400 years in the area around Suzhou, Jiangsu Province.

The show tries to appeal to a wider audience. It will also be performed at local colleges to foster young generations of pingtan lovers.

Wu Xiaoming, producer and planner of the show said that crowd funding has been frequently used in film, game and publications, but for traditional theaters in China it is a new and innovative attempt.

"It is the first crowd funding program of the troupe," said Wu. "In the future everyone can be involved in the production of the traditional art. In addition to investing in a show, they can also vote for the performers and stories on the Internet."
