City plans major cleanup of suburban rivers and creeks

Shanghai will dredge rivers, remove illegal structures along riversides and rebuild sewage and irrigation systems in the suburbs in a major campaign to improve the water quality of the city’s waterways.

The city has set a goal of making 78 percent of rivers and creeks meet or exceed the water quality standard by 2020, up from the current 43 percent, vice mayor Jiang Zhuoqing said at a meeting today to launch the campaign.

"The city government has dredged and cleaned the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek, but the tributaries are still badly polluted," Jiang said.

The national standard is to reach 53 percent by 2015 and Shanghai is likely to fail to meet it without effective measures, he said.

Gu Jinshan, director of the Shanghai Water Authority, said there are many polluted rivers in the suburbs, including some that are black and smelly.

The city has approximately 26,000 rivers stretching more than 25,000 kilometers, mainly in suburban areas. Most were polluted after many factories were built along the rivers in the 1990s.
