City plans to add more unisex public toilets for seniors and parents with kids

Shanghai will add around 170 unisex public toilets by the end of 2016, with most of them being in downtown, shopping areas and scenic spots that attract big crowds.

There are currently less than 40 such unisex public toilets in the city, mostly used by seniors, the disabled and mothers with children, said Yao Gang, deputy director of the Shanghai Public Sanitation and Environment Quality Monitoring Center.

Most of the new unisex toilets will be modified from the existing toilets, Yao said, adding that the target was to have nearly 10 percent of such toilets in downtown and 6 percent in the suburbs by the end of next year.

They will be designed for use by parents with children and adults accompanying seniors or disabled people of different sexes who need help, the center said.

Yao said officials will probably also consider providing free WiFi at public toilets in the city. But for now, it will wait and see the results of Beijing, which has recently started using WiFi in toilets.
