City plans to demolish illegal constructions to improve ecological spaces
Shanghai’s per-capita ecological space is far behind national average standard and is still decreasing, the city’s top planning body announced today.
The city’s average public green space is 7.1 square meters per person, comparing with China’s average of 12.6 square meters.
The ecological areas only account for 55 percent of the city’s total territory and the proportion is still declining, the Shanghai Planning, Land and Resources Administration said in a statement.
To improve the ecological environment, the administration today announced to set up some 4,364 square kilometers of green areas that were banned to be developed.
The protected areas include natural reserve areas, water source, forest parks, mountains, forest, wet land and rivers.
Some 96 square kilometers of land that accounts to 1.5 city of the city’s land become the top protected areas. Violators will be punished by various national and city level laws.
The authority will begin demolishing illegal constructions within these areas to provide more ecological spaces for the residents, the statement said.
