City police nab 47 Indonesia-based Chinese telescam suspects

Forty-seven Chinese suspects based in Indonesia who were allegedly involved in multiple telescams targeting Chinese citizens were brought back to Shanghai by city police on this morning.

The crackdown began in October after the Ministry of Public Security received tipoffs about several Indonesia-based telescam centers targeting Chinese citizens.

Police said 453 Shanghai citizens have fallen victim to their scam calls since July.

In one of the scams, the gang illegally obtained customer information at shangpin.com, an e-commerce website specializing in fashion goods. They called the victims, claiming they were customer service staff of the website, and told the victims that their personal accounts were mistakenly configured as wholesale business accounts from which 500 yuan (US$80) was deducted every month. They then told the victims that staff from China Merchants Bank would call and give them the money back.

The suspects then played the role of customer service staff from China Merchants Bank, persuading the victims into transferring money to the suspects’ accounts.

Police said a few citizens reported the scam in July and said they suffered a severe loss including the 47, about 200 suspects were taken back to Shanghai, Beijing and Guangdong today.

City police said they have solved 3,922 telescam cases in the first nine months this year, 57.4 percent more than the same period last year.

One-third of the scam calls were from out of China, police said.
