City sees moderate air pollution today

Today was marked the second day with the pollution level hitting a moderately polluted one, forecasters said.

The smog enveloped the city this morning and triggered a poor air quality with the AQI reaching 190, fitting into the moderately polluted level.

This morning the concentration of major pollutant PM2.5 particles had its peak at over 140 micrograms per cubic meter at 8am, nearly six times the safety guideline of 25 set by the World Health Organization.

By 10am, the polluted condition saw a respite with the AQI sharply falling by 65 points to 125, which downgraded the pollution level to a lightly polluted one. The PM2.5 concentration was also recorded dropping below 100 micrograms at 10am.

According to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, the air quality is forecast to be good this afternoon.

The drizzles expected in the city tomorrow and Thursday have a chance to wash away the particles, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.
