City set for a sizzler
BE prepared for this year's hottest day - it could be today!
That is the message the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau was delivering after it issued a yellow alert at 12:45pm forecasting a rapid temperature increase and saying temperatures today could top 35 degrees Celsius.
The bureau suggested people curb outdoor activities as much as possible.
A warm air mass above the city is strong and stable and a sandstorm in northern China has prevented a cold front from moving south, which has led to the extended period of unseasonably warm weather, the bureau said.
The temperature will drop to 31 degrees tomorrow with the chance of a thunderstorm. It will be even cooler on Wednesday with a high of 25 degrees.
Shanghai saw its earliest ever summer this year, the bureau said yesterday. The daily temperature has been above 22 degrees for the past five days.
