City to build large emergency shelters

SHANGHAI will build three large emergency shelters for residents by 2013, with life support systems to last between 10 to 30 days.

They will be equipped with food, medicine, drinking water, and transport as well as fire-fighting and telecommunication facilities, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.

The shelters will occupy more than 4,000 square meters each and serve residents within 1 kilometer, the newspaper said citing a plan published on the Shanghai Municipal Government's Website www.sh.gov.cn.

It did not specify how many people the shelters will accommodate, but they will be sited near parks and far from hazardous-goods factories.

Landscaping will ensure the shelters can be used as parks.
