City to promote 鈥榞reen construction鈥 to save energy and fight pollution

SHANGHAI will further promote "green constructions" across the city to cut energy consumptions and help reduce air pollution, a city official said.

The green construction, also known as sustainable construction, refers to a structure which is environmentally friendly and resource efficient through its design, construction, operation, maintenance and demolition.

Shanghai has built over 73 million square meters of new green constructions by September this year and renovated over 13 million old buildings into the environmental-friendly structures, said Chen Ning, director with the energy saving department of Shanghai's Housing and Urban-Rural Development Administration.

Another 10 million square meters of public constructions will be renovated by 2020 into the energy saving structures, Chen told the 3rd China Passive Building Summit.

"The city government will also research on the feasibility to promote the passive buildings across the city that requires little energy for heating or cooling." Chen said. A passive building has no conventional air-conditioning system, but collects heat through solar-energy, appliances, residents living inside and other eco-friendly facilities.

Chen said the authority will enhance the energy consumption monitoring on public constructions. The energy consumptions of all large-scale public and government buildings will be closely monitored by 2020, he added.

The city government has also announced that all the new constructions within the Inner Ring Road must use prefabricated structures from next year to cut energy consumption and air pollution during constructions. The buildings' exterior walls, balconies, ceilings and stairs were pre-manufactured in factories while workers simply assembled the parts on site.
