City's elderly population rises to over 30% of total permanent residents
SHANGHAI'S elderly population increased 5.3 percent in last year from a year earlier, causing the city to see for the first time its senior population accounting for over 30 percent of its permanent residents, the local government said today.
The population of people aged 60 or above reached 4.36 million by the end of last year, or 30.2 percent of its permanent residents, according to a report by Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau.
The number of seniors aged 80 or above grew steadily, while the increase of people aged between 60 and 80 was sharp, the report showed.
Life expectancy in Shanghai rose last year to 82.75 years, compared to 82.29 the previous year, the report found.
There were 1,751 centenarians in the city at the end of 2015, of whom 1,331 were women.
