City's heavy air pollution expected to improve this afternoon
SHANGHAI’s air quality index surpassed 200 this morning, but it was expected to improve somewhat this afternoon, the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center said.
After the AQI reached 218, a reading indicating heavy pollution, around 8am this morning it dipped below 200, or moderately polluted, by 2pm. PM2.5 particles reached more than 160 micrograms per cubic meter, according to the monitoring center. PM2.5 particles are small enough to become lodged deep in the lungs and can lead to increased respiratory problems.
Tomorrow is set to be mostly overcast with the high reaching 18 degrees Celsius, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau’s forecast.
The bureau said it will likely rain this weekend.
