Cleaner detained for murder of woman found in manhole

A MAN has been taken into custody for the murder of a woman locals believed was a prostitute whose body was found down a manhole in a Pudong residential complex, police said yesterday.

The suspect, surnamed Jin, visited the 42-year-old woman who allegedly offered services in a "questionable" hair salon and had a dispute with her about money, police said.

The woman's body was found in a flooded manhole in a green area of a Pudong residential complex on Monday afternoon and Jin was taken into custody about 11pm.

Police allege Jin murdered the woman on the evening of July 22. "Jin lured the woman to the green area, knocked her out and threw her down the manhole," said Qiao Yan, from Pudong New Area police.

Residents said the woman from Hubei Province worked as a prostitute in a hair salon near the Yangyuan No.2 Community in Pudong and Jin visited her occasionally in the past two years.

A few days before the murder, Jin allegedly demanded his money back but the woman refused.

"They had some disputes about money," Qiao said without revealing more. "The woman was just a service in a hair salon."

Jin worked as a cleaner in the community.

"He's about to retire next year, but it's all over now," said Jin's wife, who said her husband was held for 15 days by police for involvement with prostitution in 2005.

"Our relationship is done," she said.

Meanwhile, Shanghai police conducted a citywide crackdown on Monday and Tuesday on 190 entertainment venues involved with prostitution and selling pornographic products.

About 1,800 suspects, including 214 pimps, were taken into custody.
