Cold front helps clear the air
The arrival of a cold front and strong winds has helped clear the air of pollutants today, forecasters said.
According to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, the city's pollution level rose to "severely polluted" at 3am with the air quality index peaking at 303. This lasted for at least one hour with the concentration of harmful PM2.5 particles hitting about 250 micrograms per cubic meter, 10 times the World Health Organization's safety guideline of 25.
However, by 1pm the AQI had plummeted to 56 and the PM2.5 density had dropped to 19.3, according to the center.
The temperature was expected to range between 3 and 8 degrees Celsius today and tomorrow under overcast skies.
