Company fined over fatal truck crash
A SANITATION company has been fined 50,000 yuan (US$7,375) for hiring a construction truck driver who caused a fatal accident on June 18, killing a moped rider, Shanghai urban management team said today.
Shanghai Pudong Jiemei Sanitation Service Co has become the city's first to be penalized for breaking laws on safe transport of construction waste, which were passed by local government on April 15.
A truck driven by a man surnamed Zhang crashed into a moped rider who later died on Gonghexin Road, officials said.
According to urban management official Liu Weiguang, traffic police are still investigating the accident to see who is responsible.
Zhang will be banned for life from driving a construction vehicle or working in waste transport if the report shows he should bear full responsibility for the accident, said Liu.
Drivers of construction vehicles must have three years' experience of driving a large vehicle, according to safety regulations.
They must also undergo safety training at Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau and hold a driving license and a permit from the city's waste management department.
Liu said the department would strengthen enforcement against companies and drivers breaking the law.
