Container crash opens tunnel
A CONTAINER truck overturned early yesterday on the Lupu Bridge, injuring one man inside and causing lengthy traffic jams.
Traffic police opened a river-crossing tunnel still off-limits to private vehicles to ease congestion between the Pudong New Area and Puxi.
Police took the driver away for further investigation. A passenger in the vehicle was seriously injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
The truck, carrying a Zhejiang Province vehicle plate, hit the road barriers and overturned at 5:35am, police said.
The container it was carrying slipped from the vehicle and the three lanes on the bridge were blocked.
Anticipating problems during rush hour on the bridge, traffic police decided to temporarily open Dapu Road Tunnel, which is still undergoing renovation, after talking to the tunnel builder.
The tunnel, which is expected to fully open to traffic early next month, has been used by eight bus routes since January 4.
Police and emergency teams freed the injured passenger about 6:20am.
The truck and the container were not removed until 7:45am.
Traffic flow on the bridge resumed about 9:30am when the tunnel was again closed to private vehicles.
Police said part of the insulation boards on the bridge were broken but there was no damage to the road surface.
