Cool stuff on display for science, tech week

SCIENCE freaks can have a close look at the latest gadgets and scientific equipment during National Science and Technology Week, which opens on Sunday.

Among the stuff on display at the week-long event will be the "super X-ray" machines that can expose the structure of chemical compounds and proteins and a laboratory studying the H7N9 virus.

Universities, scientific research institutes and key laboratories will open their doors to the public.

Visitors need to make appointments for some venues, the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission said yesterday.

The Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility uses state-of-the-art "synchrotrons radiation" technology to create super beams. These super beams are hundreds of millions of times brighter than a normal X-ray.

The 2062 New Energy Park in Pudong is expected to be a big draw with hundreds of items on display.

"Visitors can check out new technologies like 3D printing," said Wang Zhijun, an official with the commission.
