Cop helper dies in knife attack
A SHANGHAI police assistant was killed and two others injured in a stabbing attack early yesterday in an industrial zone in the city's southeast.
The alleged attacker, a Jiangsu Province resident surnamed Mo, was apprehended at the scene and was also being treated for injuries last night.
Police assistant Zhang Aiming, 30, died soon after he was sent to the Nanhui Central Hospital with chest wounds following the 12:10am attack. He is survived by a wife and seven-year-old daughter.
The other two injured police assistants were in stable condition last night.
Mo, who was carrying three knives when he was caught, refused to talk about the incident, said Zhang Rong of the Nanhui area police.
Officers at the Zhuqiao Police Station first spotted Mo on a surveillance camera as he was walking alone on Jinwen Road in the Zhuqiao Industrial Park shortly before midnight Sunday.
One police officer and the three police assistants, who were on routine patrol, approached to question the man. But Mo pulled out a knife and tried to run away, police said.
Zhang was knocked down, and the other two, Fu Qiang and Peng Hao, were injured, police said.
Ten additional officers were dispatched to the scene, and they were able to catch the attacker and take away his knife.
Zhang, who had worked as a police assistant for more than seven years, was "a warm-hearted guy," his family said. He had captured dozens of law breakers and never been injured.
The two injured assistants declined to be interviewed.
The assistant teams work with police officers to help maintain security, mostly in residential areas and around factories.
The first police assistant team was sent into the field in 1988.
In earlier cases of violence, a man stabbed and injured four police assistants on Humin Road on July 6 in Minhang District. The man attacked the assistants when they questioned him about a moped he was riding.
A 42-year-old police assistant was killed when he fought with a law breaker in 2006.
