Cop hurt by fleeing moped

A MOPED driver has been detained after he dragged a traffic officer for about 300 meters along the road while trying to escape a license check in Jing'an District last Thursday.

Police officer Wei Hailin, 40, is still recovering at home in bed after injuring his right knee and neck while being dragged behind the bike.

The incident began during rush hour at 6:05pm as moped rider Zheng, 27, covered his face with a scarf and ran through a red light because he didn't have a license.

Wei grabbed the back of the moped and clung on until passer-by Gao Zhengjun kicked it down about 30 minutes later.

Some five to six people helped nab the driver but Wei's uniform was shredded and he couldn't move his legs after being dragged behind the bike along the road.

Road surveillance cameras showed that Zheng slowed the moped for a while and sped up again, trying to get rid of the officer.
