Cops: 20 carried clubs, shovels

POLICE caught more than 20 suspects carrying clubs and shovels as part of debt dispute yesterday in downtown Jing'an District.

No one was injured in the incident, and police said the investigation is ongoing.

The city police officers were alerted about 3:20pm that the suspects were at a company on Shaanxi Road to collect debts. Riot police were summoned to the scene and the suspects fled in three vehicles to the Nanyang Road, a small street next to Plaza 66.

"It was quite a tense situation then," said an owner of a nearby motor repair stall. The owner said the whole street was condoned off.

The vehicles parked just outside a kindergarten, said a witness.

"Luckily the kids were still studying in the kindergarten," said the stall owner.

A picture posted online showed that armed police surrounded a white minivan as the road was closed.

The people involved were later taken by the police and the street was reopened to traffic later.
