Cops catch 12 drunk drivers

CITY police have caught 12 people driving while drunk in the first three days since tougher penalties for the offense went into effect, traffic officers said yesterday.

Five of these drivers caused traffic accidents, police said.

Traffic police said they will be "cautious when determining drunk driving cases" and use blood alcohol test results as direct proof.

Officers said they began clamping down on drunk driving citywide since May 1, when the modified traffic law took effect. Police also seized an additional 22 people for driving under the influence of alcohol since Sunday.

The modified law makes drunk driving a criminal offense for the first time and violators can be jailed for up to six months.

Fines have been increased to between 1,000 yuan (US$153) and 2,000 yuan from 200 yuan to 500 yuan previously. License suspensions have also been raised from one to three months to six months.

On Sunday, police caught a driver who crashed a car into a van, injuring five people, in Songjiang District.

The driver had a blood alcohol level of 1.84 mg/ml, more than double the legal limit of 0.8 mg/ml, police said.

The driver has been detained.
