Cops kill gunman in Songjiang drug bust
SHANGHAI police shot and killed a man carrying a gun during a drug bust yesterday afternoon in suburban Songjiang District, authorities said.
Four people were arrested, and 2 kilograms of "ice," a methamphetamine, were seized along two rifles, a pistol and dozens of knives, according to the Shanghai Public Security Bureau.
Shots were heard about 2pm at Ya Ge Garden, a townhouse neighborhood on Changdong Road in Xinqiao Town. A neighbor told eastday.com he heard "two quick shots" but wasn't alarmed because he thought they were firecrackers.
City police said the gunfire erupted when a narcotics unit moved in to arrest drug dealers. Officers said they encountered five suspects, one of whom pointed a rifle at police.
The narcotics officers fired a warning shot and then fired at the gunman when he failed to put down his weapon.
The other suspects were then taken into custody.
About 6:30pm, reporters saw a man dressed completely in black and wearing a balaclava being escorted out of the house where the drug bust took place. Witnesses said the man tried to escape when the police arrived but was tackled by officers as he ran down the main road in the neighborhood.
After searching a car outside the house, police emerged with several small transparent bags containing white powder.
They also found a large number of knives in an SUV nearby, according to witnesses.
Authorities were continuing their investigation last night, with the residential area still cordoned off.
