Cops nab man in necrophilia case
POLICE have arrested a 23-year-old man who is believed to have killed a young woman and had sex with her corpse last month, prosecutors said yesterday.
Zhang Fenglang, from Shandong Province, said he killed the woman because she looked like his ex-girlfriend, who had left him, according to prosecutors.
Prosecutors said Zhang would be charged with murdering and robbing the woman on March 9 in suburban Minhang District.
Zhang allegedly fled Shanghai and was arrested by police in his hometown in Shandong on March 30. He was sent back to Shanghai to face criminal proceedings.
The suspect allegedly told police he had no intention of ending the woman's life until he saw her face, which sparked his anger after he recalled being dumped by his ex-girlfriend.
"At first, I only wanted to rob her. But when I looked at her and discovered how much she resembled my ex-girlfriend, I decided I must vent my anger," he allegedly told officers during interrogation.
Zhang's girlfriend broke up with him in July, and he then came to Shanghai. He found a job paying 1,000 yuan (US$152) per month at a company not far from the scene of the alleged murder. He decided to rob some money and return to his hometown after going into debt from gambling, he allegedly confessed.
About 11pm, Zhang discovered the 27-year-old victim, who was walking alone. The woman carried a bag and was so focused on reading her mobile phone that she didn't notice the follower, Zhang told police.
Zhang allegedly confessed he started the attack by putting a rope around her neck. He later pulled her to the roadside and strangled her to death. He allegedly had sex with the woman's corpse shortly after killing her.
Nearby residents found the corpse the next day and alerted police. The woman was naked from the waist down and lying face down in the woods, said a witness surnamed Xue, who was taking a walk with her daughter and two grandchildren when they came across the body.
